[Springboard] A Vocated Teacher

Hi Jack ,

Thank you for this fine view of the life of Dennis Dalton.

I was moved by this for many reasons, not the least of which is that when
Joe and I were priors of the newly relocated (from its exile in Paterson,
NJ) NY Religious House (circa 1972-75) we were sharing one-quarter of our
building on Claremont Ave with Barnard faculty, whose other properties
were just across the street. The "line" where Harlem began then was just
the next subway stop north of us.

I imagine Barnard/Columbia has done what BU has done in Boston
(especially in Copley Square, Allston, Brighton, even Brookline) --
cannibalize local neighborhoods. I appreciate the win/lose sides of the
issue, but I long for the retention of the wonderfully diverse
residential ethnic realities that once comprised the patchwork quilt of
our cities like NY and Boston.

Based on the article, Dennis Dalton was like so many teachers we know --
or even are.

I liked especially the note on the last page of your transcript that the
key to Dalton's profound effect is that he invites people to become and
value their "truest" selves. Reminds me of Joseph Campbell who called
his students to "follow your bliss."

Peace and love,

Marilyn
