Colleagues,

We received the same message from a close family member and are very
disturbed.  It reminds me of the attacks on Lyndon Johnson when he ran for
president against Barry Goldwater in 1964.  The attacks came from the very
right wing and often Phyllis Schlafly was the spokesperson.

I have no clue how to respond to personal attacks.  No one seems interested
in issues any more except to allow the right to co-opt the "values" argument
as narrow-individual related issues.  This week on NOW there was a
discussion of the "Culture Wars" that shows something about what is
