David Jago:
Many years ago, long after I first encountered Steiner's work, my
husband and I attended a day-long regional workshop sponsored by the Steiner
folks in Kimberton, PA--which included a wonderful pottery workshop with M.
C. Richards. We seriously looked into sending our adopted twin sons (who
are now almost 27) to a Waldorf School. Unfortunately, at the time we lived
in Collingswood, NJ, (next door to Camden, across the Delaware from Philly)
and Princeton was the closest, so that dead-ended there.
As a lifelong teacher, I know of no other model of K-12 education that
even comes close to Waldorf. Everything else pales. I am thrilled that you
have started this dialogue, and I expect you will also receive input from
our colleagues who created and who staffed the Fifth City pre-school , as
well as the (experiment ?) (in Seattle?) as you put it.
Where Seattle is concerned, you will also want to talk to Stan and Carol
Crow about the incredible work they have done with youth programs ever since
the student house folded at the time of the Diaspora in the 80s. Also in
Seattle: Look up Dee Dickinson's New Horizons for Learning website at
newhorizons.org. Dee and Linda Campbell did a week-end summer workshop at
Kemper (that hurled me back into education after a too-long hiatus) during
the three-week whole brain smorgasbord of 85. They too are in the forefront
of wholistic teaching and learning.
I remember Charles Jago from the either the mid- or late 70s when I was
at Kemper. Are you related? I was Sister Lucille Tessier at the time.
Where is your kids' Waldorf School?
Grace and Peace,
Lucille Chagnon
