Date: Tue, 22 Jun 2004 22:00:12 +0000
The following item of interest comes from the Friends Committee on National
Legislation (FCNL).

Dear Friends,
The September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, an organization founded by
family members of those who died in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001,
has announced their plan to hold a Boston-to-New York Stonewalk this summer.
During this walk volunteers from Peaceful Tomorrows will pull a 1400-pound
granite memorial inscribed with the words "Unknown Civilians Killed in War."
FCNL will be supporting the Stonewalk by providing participants with "War Is Not
the Answer" stickers, buttons, bumper stickers, and yard signs, along with
educational materials on the peaceful prevention of deadly conflict. We
encourage you to participate in or support this effort. A schedule of the
Stonewalk and ideas for getting involved are detailed below.

Since its founding in February 2002, Families for Peaceful Tomorrows has done
extensive work in advocating peaceful alternatives to war and building
connections among those affected by violent conflict and terrorism. Soon after
the attacks in New York, Washington, DC., and Pennsylvania, 120 families who
lost loved ones on September 11, 2001, joined together to call for justice,
rather than armed retaliation, in response to the attacks, fearing that war
would only perpetuate the cycles of violence which so often victimize innocent
civilians. The organization took its name from a quotation by Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr., who said "Wars are poor chisels for carving out peaceful tomorrows."

Over the past two years, members of Peaceful Tomorrows have reached out to
victims of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; family members of victims of the
nightclub bombing in Bali and the train bombings in Madrid; family members of
those killed in Oklahoma City; survivors of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki; those who survived the bombing of Guernica, Spain, and Dresden,
Germany; those affected by terrorism in Kenya, Cambodia, Chechnya, South Africa,
Northern Ireland, Bosnia, Sri Lanka and elsewhere; and those wrongly impacted by
bias crimes, deportation or imprisonment as a result of the "war on terror."
This summer's Stonewalk will draw attention to the impact that terrorism and
armed conflict has had on innocent civilians, and will call for policies that
place priority on the principles of democracy and human rights.

Starting in Boston on July 25 and ending in New York City on September 2,
volunteers with Families for Peaceful Tomorrows and The Peace Abbey of
Massachusetts will pull the memorial stone, mounted on a specially-designed
caisson, from town to town, stopping along the way for speaking events, vigils,
and public forums. Through this walk, and through community and educational
events along the way, they will bear witness to the tragic reality that civilian
casualties make up the majority of the deaths in war, and ask that this human
toll be a prime consideration in U.S. policymaking decisions.

"Terrorism and war are already defining the 21st century," said Peaceful
Tomorrows' Co-Director David Potorti. "With public attention focused on both
the Democratic and Republican National Conventions this summer, there is no
better time for Americans to consider and to call for sensible, effective
political policies which place a priority on principles of democracy and human
rights. We are honored to join with the Peace Abbey in recognizing and honoring
the human cost of war, and in exploring new directions for our nation, and our
world, toward peaceful tomorrows for all." Potorti lost his brother, Jim, at the
World Trade Center.

**HOW YOU CAN HELP**

1. Find out more about the Stonewalk a http://www.peacefultomorrows.org/

2. Spread the word! Forward this email on to your friends and relatives.
Families for Peaceful Tomorrows is designing a flier that will be available for
distribution. Email stonewalk at peacefultomorrows.org
(mailto:stonewalk at peacefultomorrows.org) to request copies of this flier.

3. Suggest places to hold a speaking event, press conference, or vigil, in any
of the towns listed below. These can include libraries, community centers,
places of worship (churches, mosques, synagogues, etc.), or historical sites.
Bring FCNL educational materials, such as the booklet "If War Is Not the Answer,
What Is? The Peaceful Prevention of Deadly Conflict," to a Stonewalk event near
you. To order FCNL materials, email field at fcnl.org (mailto:field at fcnl.org)

4. Provide suggestions for sources of food or snacks, or contact
stonewalk at peacefultomorrows.org (mailto:stonewalk at peacefultomorrows.org) if
you'd like to contribute food yourself. This can include donated bottles of

provide a pot luck breakfast, lunch or dinner for a relatively small "core
group" of Peaceful Tomorrows walkers (6 or so).

5. Suggest speakers who might like to contribute to Stonewalk events. You may
know through your own contacts that an appropriate speaker from another country
or another part of the U.S. will be in the New England region at the time of the
walk. These might include allies like military families, Afghans and Iraqis who
might be speaking in the U.S., Japanese survivors of the atomic bomb, Israelis
or Palestinians, and others who have committed themselves to seeking peace. Or
they could include authors, musicians, celebrities or local community leaders.

6. Join the walk. If you would like to join the Stonewalk for an hour, a day, or
longer, please consult the schedule below. Anyone who would like to receive
updates and join the walk can send their contact info at:
stonewalk at peacefultomorrows.org (mailto:stonewalk at peacefultomorrows.org) Carry
an FCNL yard sign, or pass out "War Is Not the Answer" bumper stickers. To
order FCNL materials email field at fcnl.org (mailto:field at fcnl.org)
*Please note: Like FCNL, Families for Peaceful Tomorrows is a nonpartisan
organization. Stonewalk organizers request that participants please leave
partisan political signs and slogans at home, keeping their focus on the human
costs of war, which transcend politics, nationality or religious affiliation.
