An announcement many of us have been waiting for: the book of Joseph 
Mathews' talks is in publication and nearing completion. Currently the 
projection is that it will be off the press in January-February 2005.
The 
book contains 32 of his talks, including some RS-I lectures he once
gave.  
It also includes a "Foreword" by Bishop Jim remembering some of Joe's  
early days in which his oratory was already evident. 
 
The book has four sections, each with an introduction (two by me, and 
one each by George Holcombe and John Cock.) George Walters has 
written the "Postlude" and Betty Pesek a note about the "Archives" and 
the accessibility of Joe's files for additional research. We suspect
that this 
book is the first of many that will publish more of his talks and will 
elaborate further on the themes he introduced.
 
The book is entitled Bending History: Selected Talks of Joseph W. 
Mathews. It is approximately 300 pages at a cost of $19.95 USD. If 
you reserve/place your order prior to 1 December, 2004, the special

We on the editorial team are convinced that the book is a first step 
in getting the theological perspective that Joe embodied more widely 
distributed. As a starting point, we hope to see the book read and 
discussed in groups inside and outside the church and in seminaries 
internationally. This means getting it beyond our "in house" network. 
So if you have contacts who might benefit from and be open to Joe's 
insights, please help them get access to the book. (We've tried to edit 
out most of the unintelligible jargon and the wholly masculine pronouns
in order to preserve the genuine offense rather than the spurious ones.)
