In response to Colleen Smith's comments and letter from a senator about not
renewing the ban on assault weapons, I rewrote the letter, using the same
logic as the senator's, only changing the subject to drugs rather than guns
and doing some editing. I wonder if the senator would accept the logic in
the arena of drug control?

Drug use is a controversial issue. People acting in good faith will very
often disagree on the most effective way to address drug usage while
recognizing the rights of law abiding citizens, and I respect the diversity
of views on this important matter.

I have long believed that further federal regulation of drugs is not the
best answer to preventing drug use. Our enemy is the drug user, not the
drugs or distributors. A person intent on using drugs will not be stopped
by more drug control laws. Instead, Congress and the States should work to
ensure that laws against drug use be vigorously prosecuted. Through this
common sense approach, we can continue to reduce drug use across the nation
and protect the rights of law-abiding citizens.

Again, thank you for contacting me. As the Senate continues to face many
complex and challenging issues, I hope you will continue to give me the
benefit of your thoughts and advice.
