Jeremy's Journey

May 22, 2005, the people of Sacred Heart blessed Jeremy Sullivan of the Camden Community House as he set out with the first push of his pedals to ride his bicycle for 3,000 miles to California. We will stay with him in prayer and support as he cycles through the States to his destination. The previous Sunday, he cycled to Cape May and dipped his tires in the Atlantic. In six months he hopes to dip them in the Pacific. In between, with his legs and his lungs and his prayers, he will carry the suffering of the people of the Sacred Heart neighborhood and all Waterfront South in his heart. They are burdened by extreme environmental injustice. Jeremy's Journey is a cry for remediation. He is asking us to sponsor his effort, not to pay for his journey, but to create a fund to green a battered neighborhood. Money to plant evergreen trees, create buffers of trees and gardens of flowers and vegetables.

The book of Genesis does not say that God created air when “the earth was waste and void” but covered the garden with vegetation. That's what Jeremy and his colleagues in the Camden Community House want to do. Eve's Garden and Greenhouse is the first step in that noble dream. Jeremy will talk this dream to everyone he meets across the nation. So we are looking for people, institutions, and corporations to sponsor Jeremy's Journey. A donation for every mile of the distance of 3,000 miles. A penny, a dime, a dollar, 5 dollars, ten dollars, etc. Make checks payable to Sacred Heart Church and in the memo section mark: “Jeremy's Journey.”

After the blessing, Jeremy wheeled his bicycle down the aisle of Sacred Heart, rode down Ferry Avenue to the Fishing Pier where he stood there between a sewage plant, a scrap yard, and St. Lawrence Cement facility. After refreshments and best wishes, he pedaled forward with his gear on a cart behind...on his way round the bend towards California. God be with you, Jeremy!
