Jan,
You know, I remember now that you once told me of your Camdern connection. I have driven by 5th/6th and State many times and when I ran the Rutgers Urban Literacy Program and visited the Respond agency based right there, doing great work with pre-schoolers, the elderly, and the homeless.
In response to your question: because we no longer go to church in Camden, I have never met Jeremy Sullivan and only learned of him in Michael Doyle's most recent monthly letter, a sample of which you can read on the website and which I urge you to subscribe to right there, free of charge. He is a poet with an enormous interest in the history behind practically everything he writes about--from the Camden shipyard to the prostitutes on Broadway near the church. He has a dog at the rectory who looks just like the RCA Nipper, same breed, black around the eye and all--and of course, Nipper is his name. Always, Michael's letters turns out to be a profound witness of the global in the local. You will see.
When hundreds of parishioners and friends feted Michael last year at our big annual parish dinner dance at Auletto's, we celebrated his 40 years a priest, ordained in Ireland--still with a touch of the brogue--and to which he returns every year, 35 years in Camden, and 30 at Sacred Heart. When he opened the envelope from everyone who had sent something, it was a check for $40,000 for his work in Camden. $40K!
Thanks for writing. I was so delighted to get reconnected.
Lucille
