Our local newspaper recently published my letter concerning social security. I post it here because it addresses a moral issue, not just a political one. Dave Thomas

"In every society, middle-aged people have supported children, elders and disabled. We use social security to do this. Now Bush wants us to quit. His policies would remove responsibility from our middle-aged to care for their elders, for children who lose a parent and for our disabled.

This isn't ownership. It is irresponsibility. People who want to invest can do so now, after fulfilling their responsibilities."

Contrary to what Bush has been saying, the two possible threats to paying full social security benefits in the future are:
1. That our economy grows much slower than it has this last decade.
2. That our federal debt becomes so large, that our government can't easily pay back the money which the Social
      Security fund has loaned it.
