[Dialogue] Fallacy of Division

Hi,

Perhaps the root problem with Friedman is the fallacy of division.
If a room of homeless men has an average income of $1000/yr and Bill
Gates walks into the room, the average might become $100 m /yr. Does
that make the homeless men millionaires?

Friedman seems to think that raising the GNP/person is evidence for
improved conditions, and it is for some people - mostly the bankers
and other plutocrats. It is not evidence of improved conditions for
the women and children. I understand why the Economist and the Wall
Street Journal want to promote this fallacy. I cannot understand why
ICA folks promote it.

Karl
