very thin verneer over idolatry . . .
using Wilber and Beck and their work on levels of consciousness, religion often seems to be the anchoring at the mythic level of consciousness of images, reality of higher levels . . . causal and ultimate in Wilber's terms. Problem is, do away with the symbols (mythic level) and what have you got? What do you hold yourself accountable to as a tradition??

I suppose if you are far enough out on one ideology, everything
toward the middle look extreme the other way.
Anyone concerned about understanding the issues here should read
"God's Politics" by Jim Wallis.
For most people, it seems to me, their 'religion' is a very thin
veneer over some form of idolatry (i.e. paganism). I first learned
that at the Bayad consult from an Egyptian sociologist.
