We did it some years ago. Truth be told, it was because our work is here and
we bought a house and etc. more than for the reasons being suggested now,
but those sentiments were there as well. Having bee born and raised in the
US and having visited there recently, I'm glad to be where I am.
Go to http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/index.html It's the site for
Citizenship and Immigration Canada. The "classes" of immigration are there.
You can surf your way through the site. I think it will be relatively clear.
As medical professionals, I think your kids should find it relatively easy.
Look at the "Skilled Worker" class. There's a self assessment tool on the
site. I'm sure they'd score high.
The Landed Immigrant process is where the rigor is, but with their
qualifications; it should be no trouble. Having a job offer in hand gets
you a lot of points, but in the health field, it's pretty wide open. There
are no where near enough Doctors and nurses etc.
They may have to go thru first and bring you in through the "family" class.
It's very common. It would not hurt to see if you can connect with an
immigration consultant. Google immigration consultant canada - you'll
probably find a bunch of lawyers. We talked with one and didn't really need
to do so, but as a retired person it might be a good idea.
As a Landed Immigrant, you can do nearly everything except vote. After that,
gaining citizenship is very easy. A couple hundred bucks and you're
saluting the Queen.
We are dual citizens. Both Canada and the US allow this now. We haven't
really "tested" it by applying for a US passport - only because there's no
reason to have 2 passports, but all indications are that we would have no
problem.
