I would like to add another facet to the diamond of Vance that is emerging
over this dialogue.
Except for a brief visit Vance made to Nam Wai while we were there in the
early 80's, I never had any contact with him until fairly recently. In the
90's Vance joined other colleagues of the eastern states at the spring and fall
gatherings we held at Shepherd's Springs in Maryland. Our son, Peter,
attended those events with us. Because of Peter's disabilities, he was often a
little "left out" during our many discussions and workshops. Vance, however,
used mealtimes to engage Peter in conversation, making silly remarks that would
make Peter laugh and enjoyed his company on walks through the woods. Vance
had the knack for being present to everyone and connecting to someone like
Peter who needed a friend. I will always be grateful to Vance for making Peter
feel like "one of the guys". Peter was always eager to attend the
gatherings because he felt loved and cared for.
Recently I was inspired by the Peace events Vance conducted in DC and MD.
May Vance now be the one who is at peace.
