Lucia Ann,

As an outsider to the ICA who has worked for a long time, I think the
basic model of integrated village development is by far the most
powerful method of alleviating poverty at the village level. How
much of it was invented by the ICA, I don't know, but others on this
list do. Doing only one aspect - health, water, income, education,
housing, technology - results in limitations from the other aspects
not being dealt with. So microlending is a part of virtually all
development programs.

Not only that, working with a single manifestation of the problem
doesn't deal with the fundamental issue of the oppression of women
which underlies all the above.

The Hunger Project consciously (albeit not publicly) has modelled
their on-the-ground programs on the International Exposition of Rural
Development's conclusions. I've visited ICA programs and Hunger
Project programs and they are strikingly similar except that the
Hunger Project villages don't sing much - a weakness in my view.

In my view, the Hunger Project took the insights of the ICA to a new
level. And next weekend about 1000 of us will be in New York
starting our work on the MDG's.

Check out the web site www.thp.org to get more specifics. They
definitely do accept money, but have found that interns mostly
interfere with the work. Volunteers are wanted everywhere, but I'm
quite sure all volunteers are used in their country of residence. No
expatriates working for the Hunger Project.
