> 80 years ago, in 1925, a violent tornado struck Lorain, Ohio. My father
was a teenager, and his house was completely destroyed, a pile of rubble in
the middle of their street. His family lost everything. The Red Cross came to
their rescue, erected a tent on their property and provided food and
clothing to his family for weeks. This past Christmas day, a fire in our home here
in Bradenton made it unlivable. Within an hour of the fire being put out, a
volunteer from the Red Cross arrived at our home, and arranged for my wife,
our disabled adult daughter and I to be housed in a motel. The Red Cross paid
for 5 nights for our rooms until our insurance company picked up the
responsibility for our housing. My grandmother would never permit a negative
comment to be said in her presence about the Red Cross. She was grateful for
their care for the rest of her life. My wife and I share her admiration and are
making a substantial contribution to the Red Cross to aid the victims of
Katrina. We urge everyone to donate whatever you can to enable the volunteers of
the Red Cross to continue their humanitarian aid.
