I debated answering Mary Laura off the list because I don't like the
list to be dominated with technical computer talk, and I'm working
with others offline who have the problems. But I thought I'd give a
final ?? summary here and maybe (hope against hope) the "filter"
thread will die down. (Of course the thread does contain profound
insight into computer karma and prayer, and even has an obscure
reference to Herman Hesse's Journey to the East which so far no one
has commented on, but let's face it, it's mostly boring computer
stuff.)

Here are the two topics in the "filter" thread.

1. The thread started with a post from David Zahrt who was noticing
that a few others have the same problem posting messages he has -
when you see blank messages, it's because for whatever reason their
mail program is using unusual message types, and the mailman software
"filters" it out. The cure is to configure their mailing program to
use plain text. Instructions for doing this can be found here:

http://www.expita.com/nomime.html#programs

Harry Wainwright and I, two of your humble list administrators, might
be able to tweak the list configuration a bit to prevent the problem,
but quite frankly, sending email in plain text is a Higher Good that
all sentient beings should strive for, sort of like passing food to
the right. :-)

2. The thread morphed into a discussion about how some people's
Internet Service Providers have spam filters that miscategorize list
messages as spam. If you have this problem, the symptom is some list
messages will be missing. I suspect this happens because some list
members like to forward funny or insightful topics they receive as
mass mailings, so our list traffic DOES look a lot like spam,
especially to a spam filter. There's no cure on our end for this, if
you have this problem you have to learn how to access your email that
your provider identifies as spam (if any). This is different for
everyone, so I can't help you.

OK, with due solemnity and much pomp, the infamous "Filter still
working wondferfully" thread is hereby taken out of being!!! Amen!!

Regards,

Tim
