It would be interesting to explore using Project Vida as a base for ICA
training - we've made a few stabs (Learning Basket was done here), but it
would take a bit more focus and energy on that side of things.

It is Virginia Stranahan from Toledo but the kids may have moved the
foundation to Colorado because some of them live there. I only knew of
Cleveland fundraising that got money from them but maybe Justin did too. It
would be great if we could reconnect as several of us spent quality visits
and time with Virginia over the years and she always gave generously but we
did not succeed in transferring her interest to the kids. Maybe Arts in
Community for Denver?? Mary Laura

Needmor is/was a Colorado Foundation. The Stranahan family gave
"donor-directed" (i.e. you didn't have to go through the big application and
review process) money to some things here I am aware of (arts related, not
ICA), but I think Justin Morrill got Needmor money for something a while
back. Dorothy (?) Stranahan died a number of years ago and I don't know the
current status of the foundation. I'll look.

Bill, is the Needmor Fdn. from Toledo. I think the family Stranahan funded
us in Cleveland for TM 76. Mary Laura Jones

I didn't deal with challenges in my first note. I think for us the more
difficult area has been replication. While we've been able to initiate and
respond to some individual requests, we haven't had staff or funding for
serious outreach in this area. Most of our funds are 'designated' for
specific program activities, and the few foundations that fund outreach
(Needmor, etc.) seem to have opted for other models. PCUSA funds an IAF
type approach and rejected our proposal several years ago. This has meant a
highly personalized strategy - direct contacts, etc. While there is a
strong sense of respect, there is still a 'do one thing and do it well'
mentality in most of the other agencies, and communities around us have not
flocked to see how to follow this approach. It's perceived as too complex,
too demanding.

Our internal challenges are fairly familiar - stretching competent staff in
too many directions, balancing a growth curve with an ability to integrate
programs and systems, maintaining the financial system with its requirements
for reporting to multiple entities, adding trained staff who bring their own
context as medical assistants, clinical providers, educators. We don't have
a dedicated training staff either - we try to do that as we can, but (see
challenge #1).
