Oops, just found this in my DRAFTS folder (the joys of children sharing your
computer and closing everything so they can play or instant message!)

Future Search founder Marv Weisbord is knowledgeable about ICA and had a
chapter in one of his books on our work, written by Pat Tuecke. It comes out
of the Search Conference model of participatory design that Fred and
Merrelyn Emery (he died a while back) got started. Marv adapted it for US
audiences, made it a bit more "friendly." They have a good reputation. If
you can lay your hands on The Change Handbook by Peggy Holman and Tom
Devane, it lays out the differences in a comparative matrix of 4 planning
methods (Search Conf, Future Search, ICA's Participatory Strategic Planning,
and Strategy Forum). Marilyn Oyler wrote the chapter on ICA's planning
approach.

We used the Future Search to do planning in our United Methodist church
last year. Beautiful program well executed by expert people. It is not as
comprehensive as the old LENS but it does a good job of receiving the past
and consensing on current needs.

arrived.

Has anyone ever heard of the 'Future Search' folk? Their website is listed
below: http://www.futuresearch.net/prosperouscommunities/index.cfm

This looks like a process that ICA facilitators might have linked into with
the Office of Community Services, but it's enough of a variant not to have
been. I'm curious if anyone's run into them.
