Colleagues who served in Area NY particularly will remember the dedicated
work of Victoria (Vicky) Adams who began work with the ICA during the
Petersburg, VA community development program in the 80's. I had the privilege of
serving with Vicky on the national board of ICA in the 90's and since we lived
close together in Virginia, we traveled together. I knew she had done mighty
things in her life but she was so down to earth I never knew what all she had
done until the notice of her death came and I looked up her name: Victoria
Gray Adams. Some of you will also know her son, Cecil Gray, who was on the
faculty of Temple University last time I was in contact with her. I believe
that he also served on the board of ICA.

This information came through the clergyNet_VaUMC (United Methodist network
of which we are a part): " A memorial service for Mrs. Victoria Gray Adams
is set for Saturday, August 26 at Trinity United Methodist Church, 215, S.
Sycamore Street at 1:00 in Petersburg, VA. In a life dedicated to social
justice and human empowerment, Mrs. Adams was truly a renaissance woman. Among
many activities, she marched with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a co-founder
of the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, which challenged that state's
policy on minoirty representation at the 1964 Democratic National Convention,
and is the most recent recipient of the John Wesley Higher Education Award from
the Virginia Annual Conference. In addition, she was honored by Mississippi
for her dedication to education and justice and was an adjunct faculty
member at the University of Southern Mississippi. She also started the United
Methodist Campus Ministry at Virginia State University in 1989. " Dr. James
Daniely at Virginia State University shared with me that she had battled
cancer for about a year. He indicated that there were memorial services to be
held in Hattiesburg, Baltimore as well as Petersburg. He indicated that a
memorial service may be carried on C-Span on September 23rd.

There was a guestbook under _www.legacy.com/Guestbook_

this weekend.

                                                                    Grace
and Peace,
                                                                     Diane
