A Call for Church Revolution
Ecumenical Institute of Chicago


The following is an excerpt from a document adopted by 35 persons attending the Ecumenical Institute in Chicago in the early 1960's. The new "coffee house church" of The Church of the Saviour used it to describe some of what they were attempting to be as a church in the marketplace.

In a time when rapid transition, flexibility and mobility characterize the lives of men/women and institutions, a church which is unwilling to radically alter its pattern of life will be unable to comprehend, address or penetrate the world in revolution. Given these inabilities a church will withdraw into its ecclesiastical shell. It will be concerned with serving its own interests for survival rather than serving the world's needs for a fuller life. A self-serving church will die.
