Actually we should substitute a consumption (VAT) tax for our jobs (FICA)
tax to support social security.  This is called 'tax shifting' to shift
taxing something we want to encourage (job creation) to taxing something we
want to discourage (consumption).  Earned income could still be calculated
for determining social security payments.  Most other modern governments
support their social services through VAT taxes.  Dave Thomas

I've been thinking that given the addiction to consumption we would do well
to shift from an Income Tax to a Consumption Tax--the greater the rate of
consumption the more tax received.

That would not only temper the addiction to consumption, it would provide
more revenue with which to ameliorate the devastation that mindless
consumption is creating.
