To Lucille and anyone else with experience,
I will soon be involved in putting together curriculum for training with
refugees, many of whom are not literate or barely. What resources or
experiences could you share with out team? I DO have access to Spring
Institute's and (Burna Dunn's) wonderful work with refugees, but was
wondering more about the question of literacy in relation to some of our ToP
methods which are at the moment very dependent on the written word (I've
done the cards on the wall dynamic with pictures before, but it's VERY
tricky!). We will be encouraging this group to work outside their single
culture and within their neighborhood which is rather diverse. They are now
learning English (just beginning). I believe they will be phenomenal with
the verbal skills (such as the "Focused Conversation" - Art Form to those a
bit outside the current usage loop), yet know they will need to find ways to
create a stronger, visual consensus and document it. If it were just me, I'd
probably work with an interpreter and have them teach me how to do it.
Thanks!!!
