Dear colleagues,
It's a small Internet world of pleasing memories and friendships, as the
email pasted below confirms. Our esteemed friend and colleague, writer and
editor John Burbidge, has just sent a delightful invitation to become
acquainted with a friend made on the journey. The trail leads from Cairo,
Egypt, to Martin Gilbraith in the UK, to a tiny fishing village in Cosa
Rica, to John in the Pacific Northwest, and now to you.
Paws and enjoy. David Dunn
(And if you're so moved, pass the invitation along to your Internet world.)
**** just received from John Burbidge ****
This communication is prompted by an e-mail I received the other day from
another friend and fellow writer, which I thought might interest you.
Lorraine Chittock is a photographer/author who has spent many years
chronicling the complexity of the relationship between humans and animals.
She does this with great skill and compassion. I first met Lorraine through
Martin Gilbraith whom she knew when they both lived in Cairo.
Recently she bought a beat up van for $750 and after her involvement in
animal rescue efforts in New Orleans, drove with her two dogs from Houston
to Costa Rica. She found a house in a fishing village to rent for $150 a
month. She's trying to keep her costs as low as possible while she finishes
her next book, On A Mission from Dog. You can read her Dogblog at
www.OnaMissionFromDog.com <http://www.OnaMissionFromDog.com> for more
information. It's pretty inspirational stuff.
Until she finishes this book, she's living off the sales of the just
released third edition of her book, Cairo Cats - Egypt's Enduring Legacy,
via her website www.CairoCats.com <http://www.CairoCats.com> . It's a great
book. She made an arrangement with the publisher that allows her to sell a
limited number of copies from her site, which gives her a much better deal
than the usual dollar a copy she gets from Amazon etc. Cairo Cats is for
travel fanatics and cat lovers, and each picture accompanies quotes from
folktales, religion and poetry of Egypt and the Arab world. It's a book that
educates readers about the Middle East in a non-threatening way. You can see
what it looks like by clicking on www.CairoCats.com/Inside.htm
<http://www.CairoCats.com/Inside.htm> .
Her first book was Shadows in the Sand: Following the Forty Days Road, about
her travels with 200 camels along an ancient caravan route from
Sudan to Egypt. That's worth checking out as well.
I'm not much of a salesman, nor a cat lover either, but I'm glad to throw my
limited weight behind this effort to help a fellow writer. Lorraine's work
is highly professional but down-to-earth, and helps us expand our
understanding of the world and its creatures. If you would consider buying
her book for yourself or as a present for someone else, you will not only be
helping her, but giving yourself a treat as well!
Thanks in anticipation,
John

PS. Every time I get something from ICA, I think of you and wonder how you
are doing. Bruce and I recently acquired a copy of BENDING HISTORY and are
enjoying re-acquainting ourselves with much of its content.
