ICA NepalSubject: Hubert Fulkerson Stroke
Hubert and I meet for a business breakfast / networking meeting every Monday morning, but last week on May 8th he had an Ischemic stroke.
I called him at 6:00 AM with not answer, so I went to his apartment. After knocking on his door also with no answer, I called 911. The fire department arrived and opened his apartment door to find him sitting on his living room chair. It appears that he had taken a shower and sat down before the stroke occurred. An ambulance was then called, which took him to the emergency room at John C. Lincoln (JCL) on 3rd Street and Dunlap. Later than day after several tests they admitted him to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for observation.

The tests they performed included MRIs, CAT Scans, Ultra Sounds, and Blood work. From the tests, they found no signs of clots or blocked blood passageways, so they diagnosed him with having had an Ischemic stroke. We learned that an Ischemic stroke is a recoverable type, because it is caused by a lack of blood to the brain rather than a hemorrhage. However, as a result of the stoke his is unable to move his right arm and leg. He also has trouble communicating back and only has a consistent four word vocabulary, although he appears oriented with his environment and understands some of the things that he is asked. For example, if you ask him his name, he responds "Yes." He is able to feed himself using his left hand and he responds to touch. For instance, if you move his legs he changes his facial expressions, and if you hold his hand he follows your movements and smiles.

On Friday, he was moved from JCL to the Phoenix Mountain Nursing Center, but was then transferred back to JCL due to a scare that he may have contracted Pneumonia. He tested positive to Pneumonia and was transferred back Phoenix Mountain. At Phoenix Mountain, he will eventually receive occupational therapy, physical therapy, and speech therapy. He is at 13233 N. Tatum Blvd, (just north of Cactus and Paradise Mall) The nursing / rehab is on the far west side of property.

He welcomes visitors, especially if you will move both arms and teach him simple words & to follow simple directions etc. He has more facial expressions. He appears to understand all that you say, yet is like a child to learn to speak, ask him to repeat words and number of fingers, or what ever you are comfortable with doing. Take a book, read to him, share printed word, have him say words. Teach him simple words & to follow simple directions etc. He has a lot to learn again.

Please pray for his speedy full recovery and the ability to be independent. Please pass on this request for prayer.

If mailing, send to his daughter: Dara Fulkerson, 5656 S 45th Place, Phoenix, AZ 85040

If you have any questions, please contact me by email or call in evening. It is ok to pass this now.
