[Dialogue] Timely quote-- A possible response

Is the questionableness of the Lincoln quote intended as a conversation stopper?

It seems to me that if a quote, whoever said it, has sparked a constructive dialogue and seems to apply very much to current conditions, then it would be gracious to share the source of its questionable authenticity and a bit more information if available about it's context.

The dialogue so far has seemed to me a most worthwhile continuation of a lot of what was said in the "Save the Internet" postings. I have saved all those and continue to ponder them. I'm encouraged by a lot of what I read on Dialogue and I very much hope there will be more, no matter who said the quote that started this latest.

Forty years a ago, I was the main speech writer for the president of the old Northwestern Bell Telephone company, now a part of Qwest. I was fortunated enough to work with a president who very much believed in the social responsibility of business, as opposed the the philosophy that management's only responsibility is to make money for the shareholders. Ours was a minority position even then but it had its vocal champions, like Stanley Marcus of Nieman Marcus, J. Irwin Miller, CEO of Cummins Engine, and others.

I'm glad to see the good ideas are still alive.

The Lincoln quote was not made by Lincoln. It has been falsely attributed to him since 1864.
