Harry:

Many, many thanks for disseminating these pieces to the list serve. This is a very savvy look at what has gone on in Iraq since the invasion. The only quibble I would have is the comment about Bush and Cheney both being oil field veterans. While it is true that Dubya theoretically owned and ran an oil company in the Permian Basin, I am fully convinced that he knows as much about finding and producing oil as my Manx cat. Running that company let Dubya pretend that he knew something about being in the business world, as he had pretended that he was serving our country in the Air National Guard, and as he has since pretended to know something about governing the state of Texas and being President of the US.

The very important point of the article, for me, is the line about whether or not the "coalition" can suppress Iraqi resistence enough to steal the oil. We are currently seeing a definite trend in Nigeria that local resistence can seriously disrupt a nation's oil production and hence its economy and overall stability. I may be proved wrong, but I don't think the US government and big business can muster enough troops on the one hand and mercenary forces on the other to truly pull this off. This, for me, is one of those "fear and fascination" scenarios we used to talk about.

Thanks again for the postings.

Grace and Peace,
