Thank you for the Buckley piece. Having spent my early years as a Goldwater Republican (maybe still would be if there were others of like mind) I spent a lot of time following another Buckley, William.
One thing that I remember from that time was his press conference shortly before losing the NY mayor race to John Lindsey. He was asked "Mr. Buckley, what is the first thing that you would do if elected mayor?" His reply, which certainly shocked and dismayed his supporters was "I'd demand a recount." This was a true recognition that the only way to get a conservative plan for the urban was by running for office.
The other was his statement in The National Review shortly after the Bay of Pigs invasion which holds a lot of truth for today. He said "If you are going to do something wrong, for heaven's sake, do it right!"

We've heard plenty from us Democrats. I'd be willing to vote republican (first time in my life) if the Democrats have weak candidates like they've been having, or if the Republicans could present us with a Liberal, for a change. Couldn't resist sending this on.
