My memory is that Tom Hayden at least did an intern year in the 60s -
he may haver stayed evenn longqer. After he had absorbed all of the
theory and metohds he could he left because Mathews was not willing
to take on a more activist role, particularly toward the Viet Nam
War. So he left I have heard a different version holds that he left
when we qwe stil in Austin. In any event, he landed in the
leaadership of SDS. Its interesting that about the same time Kem
Ellison left a top postition in SDS and came to work with us because
he was disatiisfied with the direction that SDS was taking.

Jim Wiegel here. A question for memory. I just ran across an
>article that mentioned the Port Huron statement, written as a
>founding document by the Students for a Democratic Society in 1962
>(courtesy of Senator Tom Hayden's office). I heard mention that the
>EI or ICA or spirit movement or Mathews had some involvement with
>that. Does anyone know the story?
