[Dialogue] Question

My husband, JR, was raised Catholic, and he has a cousin who is a priest.  We 
got a Christmas card from the priest which read "The Holy Sacrifice of the 
Mass will be offered for the intentions of (our names)"

Who can tell me what "intentions" means in this context?
