The issue is similar to what you normally have to do to cut a budget to bring it into line.  There is no majic bullet.  You have to do a lot of little things that aren't so little: coal technology, Hydogen technology, Conservation Green architechture, Raise the gas tax, realistic cafe standards for autos, wind, solar, sugar cane, sequestering CO2,  etc.  And in the longer term Nuclear power.  The movie "The Great Warming" does a lot better job of spelling out these alternatives and emphasizes that we have to do everything to solve the problem.

  Brazil uses miniscule amounts of energy compared to the US.  From what my energy friends tell me, we'd have to put in more sugar cane than we have land for it.  There doesn't appear to be any way to keep up with the energy demands of this economy, only slimming down, which also doesn't seem to be an option.
