This was lifted from a book documenting an around-the world voyage on a
square rigger in the late 1990's.
It reminded me a bit of Leo in Journey to the East.
First mate speaking to the crew halfway through a circumnavigation on the
Picton Castle, a 3 mast square-rigger.
Fair Wind and Plenty of It—A Modern-Day Tall ship Adventure
Rigel Crockett 2005
“Listen, we have to do some sucking– up here. OK? Though it may not seem
like it in the day-to-day grind, this voyage is something great. You are
doing something great. But I’ve got news for you: You don’t always gotta love
it. Travelling is going to get boring. Your relationships are going to get
boring. Life aboard is going to get boring. And we all have to tolerate
ridiculous behavior. That’s all part of the payment for being here.
You don’t have a lot of Power, sailing before the mast in a square-rigger.
But you have this: you chose to be here. You can choose to be here. The one
thing we have power over is how we look at things. We have power over how we
react to things. How we see the good in events. How we get involved. We
have power. We are not jailed here. We can decide to stay.
When you’re feeling stress or anger, focus on the ship. She’s the one
constant She keeps us alive. She keeps us happy. Remember there’s a bigness in
being little.”
