Hey Jim,
I remember.
I've often wondered if anyone else did, too. However, my memory being what
it is today, couldn't remember who all was on that Odyssey. Sometimes I've
even wondered if it was the same guy we met that is so much in the news
today, although I know it must be. I wish I could remember more details of
that visit - what we discussed, etc. Do you remember? Or John? I wonder if
the Dalai Lama remembers our visit. Now that would be something.
I remember some other events of the Kathmandu visit. I remember how shocked
we all were having come unexpectedly upon real 3rd world poverty. We had
braced ourselves for that in Calcutta, our next stop. I remember what Faith
Vance & I did one night - having yak butter tea in a little tea shop off the
beaten path where we weren't supposed to be. Tea was awful but the sights,
sounds, people were awesome. I remember talking with the crew from the
airplane at the hotel casino that night. I remember seeing all the prayer
wheel things outside the place where we met with the Dalai Lama. I remember
shopping for a lovely wool shawl that was later stolen in the Cairo airport.
I remember seeing the goat sacrifice or maybe it was the bloody sacrificial
altar that triggered my imagination about the sacrifice. I remember the
harrowing takeoff from the airport on that short runway up over the mountain
(barely). I remember a few other events. What about you?

John, do you recall our meeting with the Dalai Lama in Kathmandu during the
Global Odyssey?

Dalai Lama Gets Prof's Chair at Emory
Associated Press
ATLANTA, Feb. 5 - The Dalai Lama, exiled spiritual leader of Tibet, has been
named a presidential distinguished professor at Emory University, school
officials said Monday.
It's the first university appointment the winner of the 1989 Nobel Peace
Prize has accepted, the university said.
The Tibetan leader said in a university statement that he looks forward to
offering his services to students and the community.
"I firmly believe that education is an indispensable tool for the
flourishing of human well-being and the creation of a just and peaceful
society, and I am delighted to make a small contribution in this regard
through this appointment," he said.
He is expected to deliver his inaugural lecture during an Oct. 20-22 visit
to the university, and to participate in a conference on science and
spirituality and an interfaith session on religion.
The appointment is open-ended but provides no compensation, said Emory
spokeswoman Nancy Seideman.
The Dalai Lama's role includes providing private teaching sessions with
students and faculty during Emory's study-abroad program in Dharamsala,
India, and opportunities for university community members to attend his
annual teachings. He also will make periodic visits to Emory, the statement
said.
Emory also is creating a fellowship in the Dalai Lama's name to fund annual
scholarships for Tibetan students who attend its undergraduate and graduate
schools.
