>I now believe that if gay men and lesbians served openly in the United
>States military, they would not undermine the efficacy of the armed forces.
>Our military has been stretched thin by our deployments in the Middle East,
>and we must welcome the service of any American who is willing and able to
>do the job.

>John M. Shalikashvili, a retired army general, was chairman of the Joint
>Chiefs of Staff from 1993 to 1997.

Oh, great. Now that the Madman in The Whitehouse needs more bodies to
squander around the globe in continuing military misadventures
somebody's getting around to figuring out that we gays and lesbians can
be in the military after all.

Pardon my cynicism. As an openly gay man, I can't help but be offended
by the timing of this epiphany (even if it is from someone who served a
Democratic administration). How about making sure that the children of
wealthy Republicans and other "ruling class folks" do their fair share
of the fighting and dying as well? (They can even be good Log Cabin
Republicans... the LGBT Republican caucus).

I'm with Charles Rangel on this one. About the only way to insure a
just distribution of risk/liability in this matter is to reinstitute the
draft.

Peace.
