Colleagues,
I've been monitoring the two dialogues and earthrise on my office email
lately, but have been out of touch at home. Finally, I have a new computer
which I hope won't devour my hard drive every two months or so, like the old
one did.
I suppose this is in the nature of a witness. I just wanted to say how
grateful I am for the varied communications that have come my way recently.
First, the many emails about the "riffing" in the ICA and what we do in the
future. I have been much less directly engaged in "movement" activities
than most of you over the last 20 years, but I do identify closely with the
struggles (physical, spiritual, emotional, economic, etc.) that I see going
on. As painful as this transition is, I can't help but think that something
good and useful will emerge, and I look forward to the discussions about
this.
Second, as an earth scientist, I am fascinated by the plethora of recent
communications, especially from, Jann McGuire, Cynthia Vance, Sunny Walker,
and others on the general subject of climate change/global warming and other
issues relating to planet Earth. Thanks, especially, to Sunny. I got the
email about the time-slices that highlight ancient environments on our
planet as I was at work generating some time-slices through some data from
the North Sea seabed trying to answer some questions about the geological
evolution of that part of the world, which is no mean feat.
Third, I am very appreciative of Karen Bueno's offering on Richard Dawkins
and how secular folk can stand before the Mystery as we used to say, and
appreciate/acknowledge the spiritual dimension, without getting
straitjacketed by the trappings of religion. I think that this is
phenomenally important for the survival of the human race, especially with
current geopolitical events as they are.
Finally, I am hugely grateful for Harry Wainwright and George Holcombe's
communciations about Molly Ivens. From the late 1970's through the '80s I
subscribed to the Houston Post, which carried Molly's columns. I was a
great fan of hers and finally got to meet her on the day that Ann Richards
was sworn in as governor of Texas (in those great pre-W days!). My now
ex-wife and I had attended the inaugural ceremonies earlier and we were at
the Press Club in the evening for a reception before going over to the
convention center for the inaugural ball. I looked down the long room and
saw a large woman with a cascade of red hair wearing a tent-like maroon
dress sail in and just take over the room. The energy she radiated was
awesome, and I will always have huge respect for her.
So, that's it for now. Thank you everyone! This list serve is an
incredible anchor for me in so many ways, that I can't articulate it. But
keep it up, please!!
Grace and Peace,
Steve Rhea
in rainy, overcast and miserable Houston, Texas, looking forward to spring.
(EI/ICA/OE 1968-1977) and still looking forward to the next phase.
