seems like a hundred years ago, visits to Indonesia revealed the problem of exports crops versus food crops i.e. sugar cane is grown on the same land and in same conditions as rice. ergo government promoted export crops for the national economy to the detriment of rice crops, the chief food. In Tonga, we, the ICA worked with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fishing to develop intercropping or systems for growing both export and local food crops. In the USA we would have to dramatically change our eating habits and go back to eating locally produced foods which means fruits and veggies only in season. It also means paying a higher price because local stuff has a shorter shelf life.
It's been no secret for at least 30 years that cash crops are petrochemical dependant from seed to store to table. Having said all this, I am wondering how I can do without my oranges California freezes not withstanding.
