[Dialogue] Judging

Today I finally got that 'judging' is about discerning what issue is worth my life; that is, worth putting my life on the line. Clearly there are many painful, disturbing issues that don't have my name on them.

The deed that has become necessary, and for that very reason is free, is the deed with my name on it. But after weighing up all the options, including the option of not-doing, the free deed emerges as significant only when we grasp the power to decide in a context that is history-long, global, and futuric.

How long have I been teaching this paper?

Thank you, Marilyn! I'm ready to go back to pedagogy.

And I'm glad I'm not the only one wielding a sharp blue pencil (or red pen) around here!

When I was a student at Union back in the 60's, there was a very small Bonhoeffer Room that was actually in a new wing. It was a tiny basement chapel, almost like a closet, that didn't exist in Bonhoeffer's time. But it always reminded me of his agonizing, solitary decision to return to Nazi Germany. Clearly he sweated that one out at Union before finally boarding ship. His Gethsemane: 'if there's any way out of this, show me!'

Thanks, Marilyn, for pointing this out. Sorry, Dietrich.

Will correct it on daily blog and in forthcoming book.

  Dear colleagues,

I remember in a 1967 pedagogy session in Boston. Charles Moore accused me of forever wielding my verbal "red pen." Whenever I do any kind of an "editing" activity I think of this mini- Christ event in my life.

Nevertheless, I feel it important to note that Bonhoeffer wrote "observe, judge, weigh up, decide and act." For me the "judging" is the most challenging today, and likely critical to ultimately "discerning God' will.

  For what it's worth,

  Marilyn
