[Dialogue] July 28th Reflection: Thy Will Be Done

I know this is OFF point, but after reading Marshall's (ooops Wayne's!) fine
pedagogical review of the paper, and then Randy's on the lecture, I just
burst out laughing. I started thinking about how "exposed" I am (and maybe
others of us) in terms of my FBI folder - I've written to Bush a couple of
times (NEVER did that before and not sure WHY I did this time) and recently
got my name and driver's license info collected by TSA at the airport for
attempting to carry on "extremely hazardous" material - forgot I was on a
1-day quick facilitation gig and rolled on my materials bag (usually
checked), forgetting that while I had taken out the scissors (now OKAY to
carry!), I'd forgotten to remove the brand new can of 3M spray for the
sticky wall. Ahhhhh, the perils of transforming lives in a new age!

Marilyn is spot on. In the instance of John's quote the "judging" is
whether or not the enemy has a conscience. Who can decide that? I believe
Bonhoeffer's wisdom was that a "responsible" decision is not determined by
"what" is decided but by "how" it is decided and whether or not the one
deciding is willing to do so with no appeal for justification. In the
Freedom lecture we said the free person is "lucid, sensitive, exposed and
disciplined." Discerning the will of God involves all of these, but it
seems to me these days the biggie is "exposed."

Dear colleagues,

I remember in a 1967 pedagogy session in Boston. Charles Moore accused me
of forever wielding my verbal "red pen." Whenever I do any kind of an
"editing" activity I think of this mini- Christ event in my life.

Nevertheless, I feel it important to note that Bonhoeffer wrote "observe,
judge, weigh up, decide and act." For me the "judging" is the most
challenging today, and likely critical to ultimately "discerning God' will.

For what it's worth,

Marilyn
