Better get it from the horse's mouth, considering that a lot of the horses are still around (or have been put out to pasture!)
I wasn't there, but I was devastated by the news. Little did I recognize the positive value of this development at the time, or what my future would be with the new organization. I was just a 21 year old undergraduate.
My version--which is likely highly inaccurate--is that Joe Mathews essentially wanted to expand, go for broke, bust the budget (sound familiar?), not worry about debt and mortgages on the property, and Jack Lewis was much more conservative. Which raised the question, who was, in fact, running the show (or creating consensus)? Answer: Joe, Joe, and Joe plus the rest who left with 'em.
OK, now let's get the REAL story!

& BTW, read the chapter I dug up on CFLC in the book The Politics of Authenticity.

On the clip below. It took a long time for the penny to drop, but sometime in the 90s, I thought there must have been a schism of some sort in Austin. That dimension of the story has never, as far as I know been told. I think youre the first person Ive heard mention it. I understand all of the convoluted thinking that led us to edit that part out, but I find myself interested in what it was over and how it played out. Do you know more? Willing to tell?
