It's never about "Democracy", but "Free Enterprise".  The U.S. has been losing ground in Asia, even in the Philippines.  The culprit?  China!

Exactly, and you can add Amoco (now BP-Amoco) to the list.  In the early '90s I paid frequent visits to Amoco's research center in Tulsa, and there was absolutely frenzied activity going on there with regard to their prospects in "Myanmar".  When I heard Bush's "condemation" of the junta in Burma I had to laugh.  The US government will never lift a finger against this regime as long as the major oil companies are dependent on it.
