[Dialogue] Chevron's Pipeline Is Regime's Lifeline

A small but important distinction. Raw, unfettered capitalism is the
problem. Not Free Enterprise. My dictionary defines Free Enterprise this
way: " freedom of private business to organize and operate for profit in a
competitive system without interference by government beyond regulation
necessary to protect the public interest and to keep the national economy
in balance. " (Emphasis added.)

Back in the 1960s, I was the main speech writer for the president of the
Northwestern Bell Telephone company. He was a man who truly believed in
"the social responsibility of business to the community," as well as to
stockholders. It was a minority position, even then, but there were
powerful, articulate champions like Stanley Marcus of Neiman Marcus, and J.
Irwin Miller, CEO of Cummins Engine.

In our world today, there is precious little Free Enterprise and both the
public interest and the national economy are in deep trouble as a result.

It's never about "Democracy", but "Free Enterprise". The U.S. has been
losing ground in Asia, even in the Philippines. The culprit? China!

Exactly, and you can add Amoco (now BP-Amoco) to the list. In the early
'90s I paid frequent visits to Amoco's research center in Tulsa, and there
was absolutely frenzied activity going on there with regard to their
prospects in "Myanmar". When I heard Bush's "condemation" of the junta in
Burma I had to laugh. The US government will never lift a finger against
this regime as long as the major oil companies are dependent on it.
