Jim,
The situation you described is terrible at best, but that's the kind of reality we live in, and have lived in for a long, long time. I wouldn't be able to "illustrate" my "shocked-ness", but yes, I'm shocked, too. And just to ward off the depressing feeling, my response would that of "plausible deniability", or..."plausible acceptance" (depending on how one looks at it) a la Capt. Renaul in "Casablanca": "I'm just shocked, shocked to know that gambling is going on here!" (What do you think, WMJ?)

Margaret,
I’M NOT SURE I UNDERSTAND YOUR MESSAGE. ARE YOU
OFFENDED BY MY WORDING. OR BY THE SITUATION I DESCRIBE?

| So I repeat: In our world today, there
is precious little Free Enterprise and both the public interest and the
national economy are in deep | trouble
as a result.
| Today, there are far too many politicians toadying
to big business interests because that’s where the money is. When
women do this, we
| call them whores.
It seems to me that when we can still in 2007 drop to
this level of illustration the public interest is in deep trouble for far more
than just its relationship to free entrprise.
When men do this are they called pimps or just saavy
businessmen, "good" or "Business As Usual"
politicians, or even CEOs?
FAR, FAR more radical on these points than I ever used to be
and deeply offended.
Margaret

Harry:
Exactly, and you can add Amoco (now BP-Amoco) to the list. In the
early '90s I paid frequent visits to Amoco's research center in Tulsa, and there was absolutely frenzied activity going on
there with regard to their prospects in "Myanmar". When I heard
Bush's "condemation" of the junta in Burma I had to laugh. The US
government will never lift a finger against this regime as long as the major
oil companies are dependent on it.
SO I SAY: I am offended that protesting
people are being starved, beaten and imprisoned by a repressive
government. Monasteries have been assaulted, monks killed or
imprisoned. And our government, toadying to the “major oil
companies,” will only issue a “condemnation,” a meaningless
slap on the wrist. Also I felt it important to note that It isn’t “Free
Enterprise” that is at fault, it is unfettered, unrestrained, unregulated
capitalism. There is a huge difference and OUR government policy is very
much the deciding factor.
