Pat and David,
My recent experience of coming to the retreat you hosted with Larry Ward and
Peggy Rowe a couple of summers ago was one of find two very special people
whose surrender to joy and peace were a blessing to encounter.'
Now, the David I knew over several years of "co-prior-ing" in Chicago.David
was a rock - and sometimes the one in my way! Oh well.(I learned that phrase
from Kay Townley early on). And he was a bear. It was partly his size,
partly his grumpiness (on occasion), partly his downright stubbornness, and
partly his hug ability. It was not easy for me, a young woman without much
known Order history, to stand up for myself and what I knew and often David
was the one standing there in front of me (metaphorically in those days, I
often saw me as David, him as Goliath - never mind the ranks of "opposing
forces" were nowhere in sight!). And yet, while I may have struggled with
holding a grudge on occasion, (I too can be pretty danged stubborn, though I
like to pretend it isn't so) I never experienced that from David. He had a
steadiness and a steadfastness I eventually came to appreciate.
What I see happening-and I'm not sure why, but perhaps on the other side,
David and our other recently transitioned colleagues, can give us a clue-is
a great gathering of the Saints - the recent Saints that is. I see Joe there
with open arms asking "what took you so long?" (with a great twinkle in his
eye and a guffaw not far behind). So go forth David, prepare the way for the
rest of us who, when we get over being scared sh** -- oh, make that
WIT-less, may see that we never left (we simply forgot we hadn't).
Deep and abiding blessings wherever you find yourself in the Kingdom,
Sunny
