I recall Russ Campbell writing the obedience song when he was in Mowanjum - late 1970. He tested out lines with some of us.

"Come Walk with Francis" was written by Russ Campbell (with my adding a few lines) while we were working with the Aborigines in N. Territory. We also colaborated on a song to tune of :Bridge over troubled waters." Song writing with Russ was a process of singing different lines over and over again until Russ said okay. I think the Obedience song was also written by Russ while still in Chicago but I am not sure. Kaze

Conversation among your colleagues about the "obedience" song. Do you have insights you wish to enter here? If so, send them to me...

I believe it was written in Australia and Kaze had a hand in it and/or knows
the young man who wrote it -- I believe he was a musician from San
Francisco.

Yes, the tune, and also the words, who wrote them? -- this was one of the
new religious mode songs, eh?
I visited the Lutheran church here in Chester on Sunday, about 12 people in
attendance. The organist did not show up, so we sang "favorite hymns"
Joyful, Joyful was one selected. The gospel was the one about Jesus walking
on the water in a storm and Peter saying, if it is you, command me to come
out to you and losing his nerve and sinking and Jesus grabbing him and
asking, "What made you lose your nerve like that?"

Hi Jim,
Did you mean, perhaps, the classical hymn set to the tune
of Beethoven's
Joyful, Joyful, we Adore Thee..... to which we (OE), much
later, set the
words
Come all spirits roaming freely
Bind your will in common trust
Stand beneath the gaze of neighbor
Ready to engage their trust... etc.
This may not be the music you recall, but it was the
processional for our
wedding in 1967, so is also going around in my head.
I think this following translation of Schiller's An die
Freude is
wonderfully appropriate for our dear David.
Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun
above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt
away;
Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!
All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven
reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken
praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow,
flashing sea,
Singing bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in
Thee.
Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blessed,
Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, all who live in love
are Thine;
Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.
Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars
began;
Father love is reigning o'er us, brother love binds man
to man.
Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of
strife,
Joyful music leads us Sunward in the triumph song of life.
