BTW Bruce Lanphear has met in St. Louis with our Joining Hands Environmental Task force re the lead contamination issues and his research has?been instrumental in holding the EPA accountable re creating new regulations and tighter standards regarding lead contamination.

Metal Poisoning 
1. According to the program, what are some of the medical conditions facing the children of the Casaracra school in La Oroya, Peru? What is the likely cause of their maladies?

2. What are some comparisons and differences you observed from the program between the smelting operation in Peru and the one in Herculaneum, Missouri? What is the business doing in each case to contribute to the quality of life for local residents? In your opinion, why do the disparities between the two operations exist? How might they be resolved, if at all?

3. Do you think corporations should be required to balance their economic priorities with environmental concerns? If so, how might that be done? If not, why not?

4. Cite examples you know of federal and local environmental regulation over industry in the United States. What impact, if any, do you think these regulations have had on the environment? What impact, if any, do you think these regulations have had on the industries? In your opinion, are the environmental benefits of regulation worth the economic costs? Explain.
