Pat,

Although I wann't there, I share the emotion. I was 20 years old in 1968, and working as a volunteer for McCarthy in Beaumont, Texas, which was either redneck neo-Republican country or Hubert Humphrey Democrats in those days, so it was a lonely role.

On the night when the demonstrators were being beaten in Grant Park, as HHH was being nominated on August 25th (LBJ's birthday, and the day before my 21st birthday), I was at our storefront headquarters in Beaumont. If memory serves me right, Becky Watson, JWM's niece, was there too. Last night, when I saw Obama speak to those throngs in the same venue, it was an incredible experience.

We are truly entering some interesting times.

Regards to Dan,

I started this message last night but didn’t send I til now..

I just got home from the Reno Obama-Biden Victory Party. I’m too excited to sleep.
We’ve turned the campaign for change slogan of Yes We Can to Yes We Did. Now we must turn it into Yes We Will.”

Tonight, when I saw the crowd in Grant Park in Chicago it brought tears to my eyes. I was in Grant Park 40 years ago during the Democratic Convention. As a new intern in Chicago in 1968, I went down to Grant Park with a car load of others (I can’t remember who) to be, in our jargon, participant observes in whatever was going on with the demonstration. Then tensions heated up between the cops and the demonstrators. We weren’t in the middle of things and were able to work our way out of the panicked crowd, but not before I got a whiff of teargas – not strong enough to be troublesome. All this is to say that last night, when the big screens showed the huge crowd in Grant Park, my heart filled up and overflowed as tears filled my eyes.

What a different mood there was tonight. Rejoicing and celebration instead of anger and confrontation. What a difference 40 years makes!

P.S. If any of you reading this were with me that night, please let me know. I have images of the events but none of my colleagues. I’d love to hear your story of that evening.
