Dear Amelia and family,

Thank you for taking the time to let us know of the passing of Dick.

Once or twice a week when his emails came up on the screen, I had the chance to remember his presence and the way he choose to serve our community. I knew when I was traveling I could count on him for some element of wisdom from our common history. More than once he stepped into the gap.

The memory that comes up for me was doing townmeetings with you all in both Seattle and Alaska. We were the faculty for the Town Meeting in Kokiak, Alaska. There were only two flights into Kodiak per week. We arrived on Thursday and were flying out on Tuesday. This was to be one of the biggest town meeting events held to date. I think over 600 were expected. The morning of the event we were going over last minute details with the local team when an irate community member burst into the room. He yelled, 'Does this have anything to do with the Ecumenical Institute?!' Stunned silence. He then proclaimed, "If it does, I want the whole thing shut down immediately!".

Dick and a few of the community member immediately rose to the occasion and took him aside. It turns out he been a member of a anti-ecumenical group down in California. Dick came back and assured me all was OK and we could proceed--hopefully with out another outburst.

Folks were already filing into the auditorium. I had the opening talk. The irate former pastor with a group of friends in tow sat behind me. Dick was out front with the 600 folks facing me. Dick's steady gaze and reassuring presence beckoned me to speak the truth of possibility to those gathered. I had to hold onto the podium; my knees were shaking uncontrollably as I began. In my mind and heart Dick's presence held those who would tear down the efforts of months of hard work at bay.

My thoughts and prayers are with you all. Jan Sanders

I just received this email from Amelia Kroeger. Her email address is: Ackroeger at aol.com

Dick Kroeger died yesterday afternoon. Official time 5:01 p.m.

He was hunting with a hunting buddy, James Young, in Windom, MN. James administered CPR as the medical units were called by his young son, Cody. Everything was tried in the field and ambulance. The doctor at the hospital in Windom pronounced him dead after nearly a half hour of continuing the effort to revive him. I have requested an autopsy.

James Young's girl friend drove me to Windom (2 1/2 hours). I stayed with Dick's body for some time and then drove home with the girls (two of our bird dogs) arriving here about 1:30 a.m. this morning.

Dick frequently told me that he would prefer to die in the field hunting with his dogs. He was blessed.

Feeling that morality has nothing to do with the way you use the resources of the world is an idea that can't persist much longer. If it does, then we won't.
