Lucille Chagnon here:

Jack,
I just caught the most amazing segment on PBS about the Barefoot
College

I presume that you and many other colleagues have known about this, so
I'm sending it via you for those of us who, although we may know of the
amazing work of Mohammad Yunus, have never heard of this incredible related venture
started by Sanjit 'Bunker' Roy. The scope and focus of his vision is
astounding, as are the results. The URLs included here tell the story and lead to
more details.

http://www.barefootcollege.org/locations.htm
"In northern India a unique school is teaching women the skills to build
sustainable tools for their community and a better live for themselves.
,,,the work of Sanjit 'Bunker' Roy, who has spent more than 30 years teaching the
poor to tackle some of the gravest challenges facing their communities
including drinking water quality, girls' education, health and sanitation, rural
unemployment, income generation, electricity and power."

www.barefootcollege.org/campus.htm It started in the 70s, but the main
campus was built between 1986-89.
"Bhanwar jat, an illiterate famer from Tilonia was given the
responsibility to construct the 30,000 square feet college campus. Working along with 12
other "barefoot architects", it took three years of them to complete the
campus (1986-1989). Only low-cost building materials were used: no cement, wood,
only plywood (hard board), lime, sand, chipped rock and stone.
Rafiq a village blacksmith, fabricated the doors, fames and windows.
Using Buckminister Fuller's design, he has fabricated and installed over 150
geodesic domes out of scrap metal, to be used as schools, dispensaries, telephone
booths, community centers, and meeting places for village women.
The design of the campus was made by Neehar Raina and the barefoot
architects constructed the whole campus. "

Absolutely astounding. There's much more on the website. Enjoy and
marvel.
