Dear Lela,
Thank you so much for yoour letter!! We have done nothing with our portfolio since you "retired" and will do nothing in the immediate future. We are looking for an advisor but you and Don have spoilt us! Thank you so much for all your years of advice and assistance. We think we learned a lot from you; at least we'll continue on with what we think you would advise.
We saw Becky last week and her beautiful twins who are a joy and a handful.
Our best wishes to you and Don for a less frantic future.
G&P, Nan Grow

Subject: [Dialogue] Is it different this time?
Hi everyone,
It has been a long time since I wrote anything on the Listserves. Perhaps it was because my business consumed most of my time and I had little left over for Blog type musings.
As many of you know, I have owned and operated an Investment Advisory business in San Francisco for the past 22 years with my husband Don Bayer. In 2007 we sold it and, after a year-long transition period to the new owners, we “retired” earlier this month.
Over the years, I have offered financial and investment advice to a number of ICA colleagues, generally on a pro-bono basis, and hoped that it helped them succeed in the financial component of their lives. I can no longer do so going forward and, rather than contact each of them individually in these very troubling economic times, I thought perhaps a few suggested readings might be of benefit not only to them but to the rest of the Listserve community.
So for whatever it is worth, I have listed below links to three articles appearing in the New York Times in the past week, all from very credible sources that might help you think twice about panicking and doing something that might harm you financially for a very long time.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/17/opinion/17buffett.html
http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/10/12/opinion/edfriedman.php

I also suggest a web link that contains a more extensive explanation of stock market history and the hyperbole of the media on the subject that might be worth the investment of your time. It is an audio presentation accompanied by a slide show that was created last month. http://www.dfaus.com/library/videos/different/ Click on the graphic to play.
While I am always pleased to hear from any of you on how you are doing with your life, please understand that my agreement with the buyers of my firm and SEC requirements will prevent me from offering you any advice on your personal investments, so please do not ask. I hope the above helps calm some of the fears about the stock market and your financial future that some of you might be experiencing these days.
Those who care to disagree with these articles are free to do so but please understand I will not take my time to engage with you in a debate on the topic.
On a personal note, this new phase of my life allows me to assume a part time position as an Adjunct Professor at my alma mater, the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. I will commute there off and on while continuing to live in San Francisco. Here is a little article on UWSP’s website about my new adventure. http://www.uwsp.edu/cps/news/
And for those who have never seen it, here is my personal website; a work in progress: http://www.lelajahn.com/
I do plan to have more time in the future for personal email exchanges via lelajahn at lelajahn.com and welcome hearing directly from you.
Grace and peace,
Lela Jahn
