I'm familiar with Bacevich. He also wrote the forward to the 
University of Chicago Press edition of Niebuhr's "Irony of American 
History".

The material on Niebuhr you included in your message was very 
interesting, and as you suggest, applicable to today's world.

The point of my post was to look at the Order itself through the 
Niebuhrian lense. In the very last sentence of "Irony",  he cautions 
against "eyes too blind to see the hazards of the struggle". 

I know we take Niebuhr seriously now; I wonder if we took him 
seriously in the 60's and 70's.

This was just a reflection triggered by the "Annuity" discussion. I 
don't really spend much time these days thinking about the 60's and 
the 70's <grin!>
