Lin and I attended the Land Institute's Prairie Festival the last
weekend in Sep 08. Many thanks to the Salmon's who hosted us.
Wes premiered his 50 year plan complete with a giant timeline up on
the wall of the hayshed.
As you can see from the text one of his opening remarks was, "Its not
about oil--its about soil!"
Barbara Kingsolver, and her husband Steve also made a presentation of
ANIMAL, VEGETABLE, MIRACLE (a book you ought to read, or listen to).
It was a marvelous occasion.
We'll have to see if we can get a carpool from Iowa to go next year.

New York Times Op-Ed, Wendell Berry, Wes Jackson
A 50-Year Farm Bill
Wendell Berry & Wes Jackson
January 5, 2009
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/05/opinion/05berry.html?ref=opinion
Please see Monday’s New York Times for the Op-Ed piece by Berry &
Jackson on their proposal for a 50-year farm bill.
Frustrated about the exploitative nature of five-year farm bills, and
thinking we need a long-term vision for our agriculture in the 50-year
time frame as a minimum, we convened a group to discuss the issue
among those who have been working in the trenches on farm policy.
We carried that discussion to smaller groups from coast to coast to
assemble information and support.
We are challenging national policymakers to set a 50-year goal for how
agriculture should look—to be resilient and sustainable.
The 5-year farm bills during that period would be mileposts of progress
toward that goal. Our summary appeared with a related article by David
Orr in Conservation Biology (Vol. 22, No. 6, 2008).
We are seeking attention to our report by the transition team for the
Obama administration.
